Respite care that gives carers time to rest
Feel peace of mind while you take a break, knowing your loved one is supported.
We provide respite care for older people, people with disability, and families who need extra help - from short-term cover and companionship to overnight support when care needs are higher.

What is respite care and how does DANS do it differently?
Everyone needs support from time to time. Respite care gives primary carers a chance to rest, while loved ones stay comfortable and safe at home.
That could be your chance to get to an appointment, keep up your social life, travel or simply take a well-earned break from caring.
For many families, supporting an ageing parent, partner or loved one living with disability can become physically demanding and emotionally exhausting over time. Respite assistance gives you confidence that your loved one is in experienced hands while you take time to rest, attend appointments or simply recharge.
At DANS, respite support is tailored to your needs and schedule. We're not here to replace you, but to support you, so families keep their balance and avoid burnout while loved ones keep getting reliable care at home.
Flexible respite care: a few hours, overnight, regular or one-off.
What do our respite care and carer support services include?
Our respite care services can be used in many different ways. If you think about it:
At its simplest, it's a chance to get help with the care you usually provide, at a time that suits you. This could include:
Personal care and daily assistance
We can help with your regular routine, such as showering, bathing, toileting, grooming and dressing. We work with many carers to deliver customised support; ranging from helping people in and out of bed, through to regular showering support to ensure maximum safety. It's about dignity and routine when it comes to personal care.
Companionship and social support
Sometimes respite care isn't about purely personal care services - it can also provide conversation, meaningful company, and someone to keep an eye out while carers take a moment to rest. Through a familiar and regular care worker, DANS can ensure your loved one is well looked after.
Meal preparation and household assistance
Another set of hands to help with preparing meals, perhaps light household duties or general household upkeep. Having someone to assist you as the primary carer can make a world of difference.
Mobility and safety support
Someone from our team can help your loved one move around the home safely, reducing the risk of falls and supporting them with day-to-day activities within the home. Often your loved one may enjoy a particular routine in the morning, or evening, and having someone support you with this could help deliver a more independent feeling for longer.
Medication reminders and wellbeing support
Someone professionally trained to oversee the taking of medicines, and assess overall wellbeing is another area we can assist with. If you (the carer) are unavailable, we can step in and provide peace of mind.
Flexible short or ongoing respite
Respite care is often needed out of the blue. We understand this and have an flexible schedule to accommodate. Whether you need a few hours, overnight assistance, regular scheduled respite or one-off support after illness or hospitalisation - we can provide a care plan that works around your needs.
Respite care organised by you, remotely
If you have a loved one who lives in the Central West, but you don't - we can facilitate a regular visit, or routine, to ensure people living with disability or ageing at home get the support they need courtesy of you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Questions about in home care, funding, and getting started? We've answered the ones we hear most.
What is in-home respite care?
In-home respite care is short-term care that lets your usual carer rest, work, travel or attend to their own health while you stay in your own home with a DANS care worker. It is the alternative to residential respite, where the person moves into a facility for the break.
Can respite care be provided at home?
Yes. DANS delivers respite in your own home, from a few hours through to overnight stays, so routines, meals and surroundings stay familiar. This avoids the disruption of moving into a residential respite facility, which is the part many families most want to avoid.
Can respite care be arranged regularly?
Yes. In-home respite can be occasional or a regular weekly arrangement. Subsidised respite is also available - residential respite is capped at 63 days per financial year, with 21-day extensions possible, while in-home respite can be funded through Support at Home, NDIS, DVA or privately.
